Mom's Birthday

I had a birthday recently, and Sean decided it was cause for a family celebration.  He did also announce it to all the tenants, via a whiteboard placed in the hall...thankfully he left my age off of it!  I was getting congratulations all day from whomever I saw about the building!

He orchestrated the evening, and told me of his plans a few days in advance.  Since part of the day was going to be spent at the speech therapist's, I knew I wouldn't have time (what with 1 hour's travel each way) to get a proper dinner cooked, so we hit a grocery store and selected a lot of expensive h'ors d'oeuvres and little chocolate covered cheesecake pieces in lieu of a real cake.

He set up the dining room the day before, with all the dishes we'd need, a separate table for the food with a white tablecloth etc. etc.  All went fine, until he started getting a little rigid....he wanted to be the one to put everything out in the dining room, and when I brought out one of the plates, he made me bring it back to the kitchen again until he could do it himself.  And then kept harping about that for the remainder of the evening!  "Why did you do that?  You know I wanted to bring everything out!"  Times like that I just want to say, and often do "Oh just let it go Sean!"  But I know it's hard for him to do that.

But on the whole we had a nice little celebration.  He omitted his usual "Taking of Attendance" and singing of O Canada portions of the program, but we still had to go over "rules" for the evening.  (No crybabies, etc.)  Because I didn't have a cake, he brought out a plate of lit candles for me to blow out.

Look how he's "showing" me how to blow!

The dessert buffet table.

A little girl enjoying her dessert....

...and a big boy joining her to "dig in".
(That whirring sound you hear is my mother spinning in her grave...)

A fine way to end the evening by snuggling with Daddy.
Thank you Sean, for yet another memorable family occasion.
