We survived another of Sean's birthdays. Sort of.
I did get the gluten-free cake made in time, did get the proper icing with little or no soy (one year made the mistake of buying "whipped", bad bad news), found enough candles of all the same design (I went out and bought them as opposed to relying on my stash, see Skyler's birthday, past post) and got the presents bagged and put out for him to open at his leisure. I actually put them out first thing in the morning for him, but he just shoved them into a corner and I didn't push the issue. Sean can wait DAYS to open his presents sometimes.
He set up the front lawn with chairs, dragged Evie's little table out from the house and had tiki torches etc. His thought was that we were going to all sit outside for supper and cake. Nice thought, but a birthday in mid September is at the mercy of the cooler weather and earlier nights, and by the time Evie's dance class and Sean's gym class were done, it was getting dark.
The other little problem was that Dad had to work that night, so he was absent, and Skyler decided to go longboarding with friends so he was absent. Then Evie just decided to fall asleep so there Sean and I were, sitting out in semi darkness on the front lawn, eating our supper together.
Evie did wake up eventually, in time for Sean's cake. He didn't want the candles lit though, since they were "so nice". I convinced him indoors for the cake part, but seeing as there was nothing to blow out, the Happy Birthday singing kind of went by the wayside, not that he really cared, as he just plugs his ears and squeezes his eyes shut when we try to sing anyways.
He was going to pull the usual stunt with his presents, namely to leave them unopened and then start bashing the packages when he was sure I was looking, but somehow we circumvented that and he got interested enough to actually open them in the conventional manner.
The automatic soap dispenser was a pretty big hit, and the remote-controlled helicopter even more so. They got a good half hour of play out of that; the mistake I made was letting them take it outside. I thought they would be OK with it, right in front of the house, but after a short time, Evie came running into the house where I was, in tears. "Mommy the helicopter went up in the tree..." And so it had, not just any tree but the biggest frigging one in our yard. I could see the lights flashing on the helicopter, so figured out the approximate location. (And then spent a couple of mornings throwing rocks at it to try and dislodge the *%$**$$# ing thing). Sean said "Gee, this is the worst birthday ever". There was some consolation with the soap dispenser.
Well, the happy conclusion is that mother nature did her thing and did dislodge the helicopter a few days later, and even the rain had not ruined it!
